A Bit about Somercotes

History

Although references to the North Derbyshire village of Somercotes can be found as far back as the 1200s (and perhaps even earlier), it was not until the Industrial Revolution that its real formation began. The land that is now Somercotes was originally used for grazing and housed ‘summer cottages’ for herdsmen- leading to its early name of ‘Sumcot’. The fortunes of the village were linked to the coal industry and ironstone mining and, with five large pits around it, it experienced an expansion in the 19th century.

In the 1960s, the collieries closed and a new industry came to prominence – clothing. The Cellular Clothing Company had a factory on Nottingham Road, known locally as the Aertex Factory. Today, heavy industries have been replaced by several industrial and trading estates, including Cotes Park Industrial Estate.

Location and Travel

Lying in the Amber Valley district in the county of Derbyshire, Somercotes sits close to the border with Nottingham. It lies around one and a half miles from the town of Alfreton, 10 miles from Mansfield town, 15 miles from Derby city centre and around 17 miles from the city of Nottingham.

There are regular buses running around Somercotes to areas including Cotes Park, Lower Birchwood and Ironville, as well as the larger towns of Mansfield and Alfreton and the cities of Derby and Nottingham. Somercotes can be accessed by car by exiting the M1 at junction 28 then taking the A38 to Mansfield and then the first exit at the Pinxton Interchange.

Local Amenities

The main shopping area of Somercotes is Nottingham Road, which is home to two supermarkets as well as independent shops and hairdressers. Somercotes Village Hall, which can be hired as a venue, is also in Nottingham Road, along with St Thomas’s Church.

The village’s war memorial is located at the church too and was erected in 1927. Amber Valley RUFC is in Lower Somercotes, while Pennytown Ponds is a nature reserve which is popular with ramblers and dog walkers.
