History

Despite having a relatively small population of just over 5,000 residents, Wirksworth has been home to people with an entrepreneurial spirit for centuries. The nearby thermal springs are thought to be one of the reasons why people chose to settle in the area alongside the sheltered sites that were ideal for growing oats. St Mary’s parish church dates back to the year 653 and throughout the 1800s, numerous discoveries were made, including woolly rhino bones and the remains of both Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements.

The town received its market charter in 1306 from Edward I and the Memorial Gardens continue to host the weekly market, which is filled with traders offering a wide selection of goods. The area is also known for its mining heritage, which was cemented in part when Henry VIII permitted the miners’ court charter.

A number of notable people have lived in the area throughout history, including Abraham Bennet who played a significant role in the development of electricity, journalist and survivor of the Titanic Lawrence Beesley, and writer D.H. Lawrence.
