International Women’s Day

This International Women’s Day, here at the HR Dept South London we are taking the time to reflect on the women that inspire us. As a female lead team, we are constantly inspired by each other’s work ethic and compassion. Here are the women who inspire us in our daily life and careers.   

Abbie: Stacey Dooley and Amelia Dimoldenberg   

I consider Stacey Dooley to be an inspiration as she did not let her lack of traditional education stop her from entering the media world, it is inspiring to see a working-class woman as a presenter and journalist as this representation is typically lacking. As a working-class woman myself this is very inspiring to see.   

Amelia Dimoldenberg is also an inspiration as she rose to success through her Chicken Shop Date series therefore proving the power within non-traditional media forms such as social media and YouTube. Dimoldenberg had a vision of success and stuck to it despite people saying it would never work and now she is on red carpets interviewing celebrities and arguably changing the face of entertainment journalism.   

It is inspiring to see two young women achieve their goals and rebel against traditional norms, they inspire me as a young person just starting their media career.   

Helen: Queen Elizabeth and Margret Thatcher  

From a young age, I became aware that it was unusual for women to often be in positions of power.  However, it was empowering to see these women in such high positions of power from Monarch to Prime Minister and this inspired me to believe that women could and did undertake important senior roles.   

Ali R: Manager 

Someone who really inspired me was a female manager I worked for many years ago.  She really knew how to nurture her employees and help them excel in their roles.  She would always challenge what you thought was your comfort zone and gently push you out of that until you were achieving things you did not feel were possible.  At the same time, she knew when to deliver tough love and hold you accountable when the situation called for it.  To coin a phrase from Maya Angelou, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel”. In this case I will never forget how she made me feel.
