A Bit About Carshalton
History
It is believed that Carshalton has been an inhabited settlement since the Neolithic period, based on artefacts that have been discovered in the area dating from this era. It is thought that Carshalton was originally a number of hamlets rather than a single village and that habitation was predominantly centred around the water mill and used as a farming area.
There is evidence that Carshalton was originally famed for its walnuts, trout, cress and lavender, although increased residential developments have ended this farming legacy.
Location and Travel
Carshalton is situated in the London Borough of Sutton, 9.5 miles south-southwest of Charing Cross. Prior to the creation of the Greater London area in 1965, Carshalton was in the administrative county of Surrey.
Carshalton is easily accessible by road and rail, as the busy A232 runs through Central Carshalton, whilst its two railway stations – Carshalton and Carshalton Beeches – offer easy access to the centre of London.
Carshalton is well served for green and public transport options too, with five bus services operating from the High Street, a leisure trail along the River Wandle which is ideally suited to cyclists and walkers, and Carshalton is on Route 20 of the National Cycle Network.
