A Bit About Cheam

Cheam is a London suburb located just under 11 miles to the south west of Charing Cross and boasts a long history, thriving community, and excellent links to other parts of London and beyond. Parts of Cheam Village and Cheam Park form part of a conservation area, and the town sits adjacent to several impressive parks, including Nonsuch Park.

History

Cheam has a long and rich history, appearing in the Domesday Book as having assets, including a church and woodland that was worth 25 hogs! King Henry III signed a charter stating that Cheam would become a town in 1259, and in more recent years, the town was home to the original Cheam School, which was attended by Prince Phillip before its move to Berkshire.

Location and Travel

Cheam is surrounded by a number of other suburban London towns, including Sutton, Morden, and Worcester Park. Cheam station is located within Travelcard Zone 5 on the Sutton and Mole Valley lines. A direct service to London Victoria takes just 30 minutes.

The A217 runs through Cheam, connecting the town with the likes of Fulham, Tooting, and Wandsworth. The A232 also serves Cheam, offering connections to Sutton and Ewell. The solid road connections mean that the town benefits from several bus routes, connecting Cheam to locations including Sutton, Kingston, Wallington, Putney Bridge, and Croydon.

Local Amenities

There are a number of notable locations in and around Cheam, including Nonsuch Park, which is home to Nonsuch Mansion, cafe, and flower garden. Cheam Park is another excellent open space, which has a children’s playground, cafe, football pitches and tennis courts.

As parts of the town are within a conservation area, Cheam is home to several notable buildings and structures. Whitehall is a weatherboarded, timber framed house in the heart of Cheam Village with an original structure that dates back to 1500. The building now houses a historic museum, which reopened in 2018 following a £1.6m investment.

Cheam is home to a wide range of businesses, including gyms, sports clubs and fitness centres. There is also a thriving restaurant and cafe scene in the town, and locals are served by several small supermarkets and convenience stores.
