History

Mitcham was initially part of Surrey and just a village. Today it is a thriving residential and business area near other key districts such as Sutton, Croydon, Brixton, Merton and Streatham. Mitcham has a population of around 65,000 and its wards include Pollards Hill. 

The area has plenty of historical buildings, thriving businesses and the well-known Mitcham Common which covers 460 acres of land. For cricket fans, Mitcham can claim with some credibility to be the home to the UK’s oldest cricket ground that has been in continual use, with games played on the Cricket Green as far back as 1685.

Mitcham is a borough in South London, located in Merton and just seven miles south of Charing Cross. It’s easy to travel to and around. It has two railway stations – Mitcham Eastfields and Mitcham Junction. These operate Thameslink and Govia Thameslink trains to Epson, Sutton, London Bridge, London Victoria and St Albans. Mitcham also has four tram stops that operate Tramlink services covering Phipps Bridge, Belgrave Walk, Mitcham and Mitcham Junction. Travellers can get the tram to Croydon, Wimbledon and New Addington on direct routes.

There are plenty of London bus services that run through Mitcham and these include two night buses and National Express operates a series of coaches that go to destinations such as London Victoria, Eastbourne and Worthing.
