A bit about Penge

History

Penge has a rich history that has created its own unique identity today. It may be a suburb of London, but Penge retains its own feel and distinct character. Although its first formal recording was in the Domesday book, its history predates this time. As an ancient settlement, the Saxon King Eadwig referred to Penge in 957 AD. It is also one of London’s few areas that retains an ancient Celtic name.

The settlement grew originally in Green Lane and then continued to spread outwards over the centuries. It was originally known for its dense and wide Great North Wood, which was filled with wild boar. In 1725, the population was recorded at 60. Penge has been designated geographically in London county, Surrey or Kent at different times and it’s known today for its lovely countryside, great amenities, and busy, thriving town centre.

Location and Travel

Penge is located in South East London. It’s 3.5 miles away from Bromley, 7 miles away from Charing Cross and 3.7 miles away from Croydon. Penge is a busy destination in its own right and packed with local businesses, attractions and services.

As a London suburb, Penge is very easy to travel to and from. Commuters choose the bus to travel to central London in less than 20 minutes. Penge West and Crystal Palace railway stations both offer direct routes into the city and beyond. There is round-the-clock access into London and surrounding areas via the bus service. Penge also has electric charging points available at Penge station and the suburb is well served by local road networks into Anerley, Beckenham, Lower Sydenham, Spring Park and Streatham.

Local Amenities

There’s plenty to see and do in Penge. The suburb has a lively entertainment and cultural history, and you can enjoy plenty of both at the Bridge End Theatre. Explore Penge’s green outdoor spaces, many shops, restaurants, cafes and bars dotted around the centre. Take the children to Alexandra Recreation Ground, visit the King William IV gardens, explore the war memorial and admire the Royal Waterman’s Almshouses and St John’s Church. There is also a leisure centre, plenty of supermarkets, easy parking and a library.
