A bit About Streatham

Streatham started life as a small settlement, with its name literally meaning “hamlet on the street”. This street was the main road to Roman London (known then as Londinium), which linked the city with a port close to Portslade on the South coast. This road continued to remain important following the departure of the Romans, becoming a major coach route in the 17th Century before ultimately evolving into the A23.

Streatham itself remained a village until the 18th Century when it became known as a healthy destination thanks to its natural springs. Wealthy Londoners were keen to build country houses in the vicinity of the Streatham spa, and so the area began to be developed. Several grand estates were founded in the area, including Streatham Park and Park Hill, the latter of which was home to sugar magnate Sir Henry Tate.

Location and Travel

Streatham is located in South London and mostly lies within the borough of Lambeth, although part of it lies in the borough of Wandsworth. It is 5 miles south of Charing Cross, south of Clapham and east of Wimbledon, and is well served by public transport. As well as regular bus services, Streatham boasts three railway stations (Streatham Hill, Streatham Common and Streatham), and is close to the underground stations at Tooting Bec, Balham, and Brixton, which provide access to the Northern and Victoria lines.

For drivers, in addition to the historic A23 road, the A216 runs through Streatham linking it to the South East and North East of the city, whilst the London Road provides a route from North to South.

Amenities

There is plenty to enjoy in the Streatham area. Streatham Common offers a chance to relax outdoors and is a popular choice for families and joggers. Meanwhile, the lovely Streatham Green has been given a “London Spade” award for being the best public open space in the capital.

Music lovers will want to explore Streatham’s vibrant music scene, with the award-winning Hideaway venue presenting live acts ranging from jazz and funk through to swing and soul music. Sporting enthusiasts can enjoy a visit to Streatham Ice and Leisure Centre, which boasts an ice rink, two swimming pools, sports courts and a large gym.
