A Bit About Tooting

History

Tooting has an ancient history that predates the Saxons and it also features a number of particularly impressive Roman roads that were built to link the centre of Londinium with Chichester. Tooting was also mentioned in the Domesday Book.

Tooting experienced its largest growth spurts during the Victorian and Edwardian periods, as the new middle classes moved closer to the city centre to access better job opportunities whilst still being able to enjoy leisure, entertainment, green spaces and more.

Location and Travel

Tooting, in South London, is a district that forms part of Wandsworth borough and also spans part of Merton. It’s situated around five miles to the southwest of Charing Cross station and it’s a bustling, lively and dynamic part of South London with fantastic connections into the city and beyond.

Tooting is very well served for transport. Train-wise, it’s located on the Northern Line for the Underground and has stations; Tooting Broadway and Tooting Bec, both of which sit at different ends of the High Street. At Tooting railway station the National Rail network provides direct links to Luton, St Pancras, Farringdon, Wimbledon and Sutton.

Bus links are made easy with a variety of routes between Tooting and Sutton, Croydon, Central London, Kingston and Sutton. The surrounding road and motorway networks make it easy to get into the city and surrounding areas. Buses run throughout the day to local areas such as Balham and Streatham, plus Summerstown, Furzedown, Wimbledon, Clapham and Wandsworth.

Local Amenities

Tooting has some great amenities, including shops, bars, restaurants and leisure facilities and thanks to its large British Asian community, it is also home to the famous Curry Mile, filled with excellent Indian and Asian restaurants.

Tooting Common is a popular local green space and Totterdown Fields is notable for being London’s first London County Council cottage estate, with over 1200 houses being built in a conservation area of 38 acres. Influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement, many of the original cottages still exist today.

Other notable leisure attractions include Tooting & Mitcham FC, and the greyhound racing stadium at Wimbledon. Tooting also has two bustling indoor markets which are very popular.
