A Bit About Warlingham

History

Warlingham is a quaint village that is situated in the Surrey countryside and boasts a rich history. It has been occupied since at least 1144 and in 1841 was recorded as having 512 residents. During the Victorian period, Warlingham was home to the inventor of the incandescent lightbulb, Sir Joseph Swan.

The village also has close ties to famous architect Sir George Gilbert Scott, who led the project to renovate and restore the village’s church in 1857. The church and its vicarage are listed by national heritage as Grade II* monuments.

Warlingham saw a significant amount of action during the Second World War as the Battle of Britain was fought in the skies above it, as British fighter jets would depart from the nearby RAF bases Biggin Hill and Kenley to intercept German bombers navigating towards London. The village commemorates the efforts of its local residents in the Warlingham War Memorial, which is situated on the village green.
