A Bit About Abingdon

Abingdon-on-Thames, often known simply as Abingdon, may be one of the oldest towns in England. Archaeologists have found axes there that were forged around 400,000 years ago, when early humans were only just beginning to build settled communities instead of living the hunter-gatherer life.

The town’s significance grew in Medieval times thanks to the Abbey of St Mary’s and its major position in both religious and cultural life, but this would be eroded by Henry VIII’s destruction of the monasteries. As time went on merchants were able to establish a footing thanks to the river and its thriving barge trade. Famous traditions still carried out today include Swan Upping and Bun Throwing.

Location and Travel

Abingdon’s central location in England makes it easy to access from all sides of the UK. This includes being able to reach London within an hour. The closest major road is the A34, which links to the M40 and Oxford if coming from the north or the M4 if travelling from the south.

There is no railway station in Abingdon itself, but nearby Radley and Oxford both have rail links and regular bus services to the town. There are also bus, road and rail connections to take you to London airports such as Heathrow and Gatwick, as well as other southern hubs such as Birmingham and Bristol.

Amenities

From historic roads such as East St Helen Street and Ock Street that have been inhabited for centuries, to nearby Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty including the Chilterns and the Cotswolds where you can walk and appreciate nature, Abingdon has something for everyone. You can find out more about the history and geography of the area from the Visitor and Community Information Centre or from the local museum. Tours of the town are available.

Other sites of interest include the Guildhall, St Helen’s Wharf and Gardens, Albert Park, the MG Car Club (where the MG factory ran for many years) and various historic churches. There are also a range of shops including the Peachcroft Shopping Area and Fairacres Retail Park, markets, restaurants and cafes. Stert Street is known for its independent shops, whilst Bury Street hosts larger retailers.

Sports fans can make use of the local leisure and tennis centre, or practise athletics and play team games on the pitches of Tilsey Park. Other facilities include an outdoor pool and skatepark. Local sports clubs include familiar sports such as football, rugby, cricket and cycling as well as water-based activities such as rowing, sailing and canoeing.
