A Bit About Cholsey

The charming village of Cholsey is located in South Oxfordshire, just a couple of miles to the south of Wallingford.

History

The village has a long and rich history, confirmed by the discovery of a Bronze Age site on Whitecross Farm. The area also formed part of a large Roman site, which contained some of the finest examples of corn dryers likely constructed by a skilled engineer.

It is believed that Cholsey land was owned by the House of Wessex in the 6th and 7th centuries, during which time Saint Wilgyth was venerated. Queen Dowager Elfthryth was gifted land by King Ethelred the Unready, upon which she founded the royal nunnery at Cholsey Abbey in 986. This structure is believed to have been destroyed in 1006 by the Vikings.

Saxon masonry in St Mary’s church still survives, with much of this cruciform church being constructed from stone and flint in the 12th century. Notably, Dame Agatha Christie is buried in the churchyard.

Other notable residents include Poet Laureate John Masefield, who lived at the now grade II listed farmhouse on Westfield Road, and Edward Prioleau Warren, who designed the grade II listed Beach House on Halfpenny Lane.

Location and Travel

Cholsey railway station serves the village and is positioned between the stations of Didcot Parkway and Goring & Streatley. Cholsey station is managed by Great Western Railway and is served by a selection of services offering connections to London Paddington, Oxford and Reading. Services run between Monday and Saturday, allowing passengers to get to Oxford and Reading in around 20 minutes, and London Paddington in an hour.

Notably, Cholsey railway station is also located on the heritage Cholsey and Wallingford Railway, with steam locomotive services operating on the line during special events throughout the year.

Cholsey is served by the Thames Travel 136 route, which connects the village with Benson and Wallingford. However, there are no evening, bank holiday or Sunday services.

Local Amenities

Despite its compact size, Cholsey has a variety of local amenities and is home to a number of local businesses. Wallingford Road is one of the main roads leading into the village, meeting Church Road in the heart of the village. A pub, several schools, a supermarket and a pharmacy can all be found in this area of the village.

Cholsey Recreation Ground has something to offer everyone. As well as being popular amongst dog walkers, there is also a dedicated children’s playground, skate park, tennis court, and pavilion, which is used as a community centre.

Nearby Cholsey Great Hall is a popular venue for a variety of shows and community events, and it also hosts a regular market where local makers can showcase their arts, crafts, and artisanal products.
