A Bit About Avebury
History
Avebury is a site of historical and scientific interest. It is famous for being a principal ceremonial site, dating back to the Neolithic period with artefacts having been recovered from as early as 2850 BC. It is home to one of the largest and most complex surviving Neolithic henge monuments in the UK.
Avebury is set within a World Heritage Site which is open to visitors all year round during daylight hours. Visitors to the site can also explore West Kennet Avenue, West Kennet Long Barrow, The Sanctuary, Windmill Hill, and Silbury Hill, which form part of a sacred landscape dating back to the Neolithic and Bronze Age.
Location and Travel
Avebury is in the county of Wiltshire and approximately 18.5 miles north of Stonehenge. The archaeological site spans an area of 28.5 acres at the foot of the Marlborough Downs, running alongside the River Kennet.
Avebury is accessible by rail, with the nearest stations being Pewsey, which is 10 miles away, and Swindon, which is 11 miles away. There are regular services into Swindon from Reading, London Paddington, Bristol Temple Meads, Cheltenham Spa, Swansea and Gloucester.
Avebury is situated 7 miles from Marlborough, and drivers can access the village via the A361, the A4, the B4003 and the A4361. Avebury is approximately a 15 minute drive from the M4 motorway. The village is served by two bus routes. The number 49 bus service runs from Swindon and Devizes on an hourly basis, while the less frequent number 42 bus visits the village from Calne and Marlborough.
Local Amenities
Avebury shopping is dominated by National Trust and English Heritage gift shops, although other independent and local businesses have a presence, and the village has its own pub. There are no schools or supermarkets in Avebury, with these amenities being a short drive away in Swindon, Marlborough and Devizes.
