A Bit About Calne

Located in Wiltshire in the south west, the town of Calne forms part of the northwestern edge of the North Wessex Downs, which is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

History

Calne has been a populated site since the Anglo-Saxon times, and in 978 it was known for being home to the large building where the Archbishop of Canterbury met with the King’s council to justify his move to replace secular priests with Benedictine monks. By 1086, Calne was a well-known market town, and in the 18th century, the town had a thriving woollen broadcloth industry.

Calne has been home to several industries over the centuries, including quarries that were sources of stone used in building construction. The grounds of St Mary’s School are still home to a 19th century kiln used during the lime extraction processes that took place at the time.

Location and Travel

Calne benefits from excellent transport connections, and while it doesn’t have its own railway station, Chippenham, Pewsey and Melksham stations are all within easy reach.

The A4 runs through Calne, connecting the town with central London, Bath, Reading, and Bristol. Calne is also positioned just 12 miles from Junction 16 of the M1 motorway. There are several bus operators serving Calne, which provide connections with a range of towns and cities, including Bath, Swindon, Devizes and Chippenham.

Local Amenities

Calne houses around 20 public art installations, including murals and bronze sculptures, which form part of a Public Art Trail. Other notable public amenities include Calne Library, which has won numerous awards for its design and has remained an important part of the community since it was opened in 2001 by Queen Elizabeth II. The town is served by a large supermarket as well as several other smaller convenience stores, a leisure centre, and sports club. There are several eateries and pubs to enjoy, some of which can be found on the town’s main roads, including London Road and Oxford Road.

Looking slightly further afield, the town is close to a number of popular attractions, including the Cherhill White Horse, the Avebury stone circle UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Grade I listed Bowood House.
