History

Chippenham is an ancient market charter town located in northwest Wiltshire. Located near the Cotswolds, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it’s 13 miles away from Bath and 86 miles from London. 

Chippenham is believed to have existed as a small settlement since before the Romans, and it sprang up on a crossing point of the River Avon, making it important for travellers and traders. Today it’s a thriving and upmarket town popular with commuters and families alike thanks to its excellent housing, location, travel and access to local amenities. Historically, it used to be a town to pass through on the way to surrounding bigger towns and cities, but nowadays is a thriving residential location with plenty of small businesses in the vicinity.

Location and Travel

Chippenham is close to Marlborough Downs, the Cotswolds and Salisbury Plain. It is also surrounded by popular Cotswold villages such as Biddestone, Lacock and Castle Combe. Popular visitor attractions include Bowood, Longleat, Lacock Abbey, Corsham Court and Sheldon Manor. 

Chippenham Railway Station runs regular services on the Great Western Main Line, with regular services between Swindon and Bath Spa and into London Paddington. Chippenham is close to all major road networks and has regular bus services which link up the local towns and villages. It’s also a popular spot with cyclists. Chippenham is well served for access; the A4 is just three miles away, and it’s a fast access point to everywhere you need to be by road.

Chippenham is now a notably dynamic and busy market town with over 40,000 residents. It perfectly blends old and new, with many architectural gems, contemporary shops, restaurants and bars and access to superb green space, as well as the nearby towns of Swindon and Bath. Some of the main attractions include John Coles Park, Lane House Alpaca Farm, Castle Combe Race Track and Yelde Hall.
