A Bit About Kemble

History

Kemble is a pretty village in the Cotswold district of Gloucestershire whose earliest links to civilisation are the Anglo-Saxon cemetery within its borders. It dates back to the 7th century and is home to a church with fascinating period features, including a Norman door, a tower that dates to circa 1250, and a spire that was added in 1450.

Kemble is best known as the previous home of the RAF Red Arrows aerobatic display team, which operated from its airport from 1966 until 1983.

Kemble is situated close to the source of the River Thames, known as Thames Head which is a seasonal spring which is marked by a circle of stones in a quiet field and an inscription. This tourist attraction is a 30 minute walk from Kemble, and there is no admission fee.

Location and Travel

The village of Kemble is situated 4 miles from Cirencester, 20 miles from Swindon and 22 miles from Gloucester. It is accessible by road via the M5 motorway, which branches onto the A417 and the A429, which runs directly through the village.

Kemble has its own railway station which is served by Great Western Railway to Swindon, London, Gloucester and Cheltenham Spa. Kemble is served by 6 bus routes that transport passengers to Cirencester, Malmesbury, Wotton-Under-Edge and Stroud. The C62 and C69 buses offer direct access to Cirencester college.

Cotswold Airport is within the Kemble district boundary and is home to private and commercial aircraft, including passenger craft flying to and from overseas locations, including Milan and Barcelona. Various flying clubs operate out of the airport, and decommissioned planes are stored at the site.

Local Amenities

Kemble is a small village that prides itself on its local ambience and amenities. It has a primary school, which is attended by around 100 pupils, a charming pub that serves freshly made food alongside excellent wines and ales and a village shop which also incorporates a post office.
