A bit about Old Town Swindon

History

Located in Wiltshire, Swindon is a thriving town in the south west of England that dates back to the Bronze Age. It has a particular association with the Great Western Railway and its manufacturing base that reached its prime in the 19th century. Today, Swindon has one of the UK’s best performing local economies and is the seventh-most productive town by worker output. Its key industries include advanced manufacturing, digital and financial services, with a particularly large base of SMEs.

Location and Travel

Swindon is perfectly located for London, which is just 45 minutes away by train or around 78 miles down the M4. Both Heathrow and Bristol airports are just an hour away. The major freight ports of Southampton and Bristol can also be accessed in around an hour.

Swindon is central for roads, railway lines and other forms of public transport. Some of the most popular areas for commuters living centrally in Swindon include Queenstown, Broadheath, Walcot, New Town, Queensbridge and Gorse Hill in the town itself. Other popular and very close areas for commuting include Royal Wootton Basset – about 20 minutes away – Widham, Lydiard Green, Wanborough, Sevenhampton and Broad Blunsdon.

As well as Swindon railway station itself, rail travel is made easy thanks to other nearby stations such as Chippenham, Kemble and Didcot Parkway.

Local Amenities

Swindon has gone from being a sleepy market town just two hundred years ago to a thriving, bustling modern town with a fantastic set of amenities and a busy visitor economy. Lydiard Park is an impressive green space location of over 260 acres, and the gateway to the Cotswolds – Kemble – is just 15 minutes by car. In the town itself, you’ll find shops, bars, restaurants, theatres, cinemas and beautiful cobbled streets, as well as leisure centres, parks and plenty more. There are also award-winning museums and plenty of family attractions, as well as a reputation for being a shopper’s paradise.
