A Bit About Royal Wootton Bassett

Royal Wootton Bassett is a picturesque Wiltshire market town positioned between Calne and Swindon. The town has a long and rich history dating back to 681 AD, during which time its links to agriculture and farming have helped local communities to thrive, and the area continues to be an excellent place to live and work.

History

Wootton Bassett’s recorded history can be traced back to 681 AD when it was known as Wodeton. The area experienced continuous settlement throughout the Iron Age and Roman Britain and is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it is noted that wealthy Norman landowner Miles Crispin had rights to the land.

In the mid-1990s, Wootton Bassett Mud Spring was named as a geological Site of Special Scientific Interest, in part due to the Late Jurassic-era iridescent fossils that emerge from the clay and mud.

From 2007, members of the British Armed Forces who were killed in Afghanistan and Iraq were repatriated to RAF Lyneham, which is located just over four miles from Royal Wootton Bassett. The bodies were transported through the town to the John Radcliffe Hospital and local residents, business owners and members of the Royal British Legion would line the streets to formally show their respect. In 2011, Queen Elizabeth II granted royal patronage to the town, which formally recognised the role it played in military repatriations.

Location and Travel

Royal Wootton Bassett is served by a number of main roads, including the A3102, which provides connections with Melksham and Swindon. The B4042 connects the town to Malmesbury, and the area also allows easy access to the M4 motorway which runs between South Wales and London.

The town no longer has its own railway station, however, it is positioned between Swindon, Kemble and Chippenham railway stations, with Melksham, Pewsey, and Bedwyn stations also reachable, which offer connections to London, South Wales, and the South West.

Local Amenities

The A3102 runs through the heart of Wootton Bassett and is lined with an array of supermarkets, pubs and cafes for locals and visitors alike to enjoy. There are several green spaces in the local area, including Fairfield Park, Poets Field, and the Jubilee Lake and Playground.

Royal Wootton Bassett enjoys an annual arts festival and is home to Wootton Bassett Town football club, in addition to a number of other sports teams, including the Wootton Bassett Hockey Club, Wootton Bassett Swimming Club, and the Wootton Bassett Bowls Club.
