A Bit About Wroughton

Located in northeast Wiltshire, Wroughton is a beautiful and well-connected large village that forms part of the larger Borough of Swindon.

History

There is some evidence to show that humans were living in the area around Wroughton as far back as the Mesolithic period. However, most of the earliest evidence of human activity dates to the Neolithic period, as Avebury’s large ritual complex attests. During the Roman period, Wroughton was the site of a large settlement and farming complex. Continuous settlement here continued well into the early Middle Ages, shortly after which the town saw two battles in 567 AD and 825 AD.

The annual Wroughton feast was a popular summer fair that took place between 1855 and 1930 and spanned the entire week. Residents and local farmers all attended, and there were various events to get involved with, including climbing a greasy pole to win a leg of mutton.

Wroughton expanded significantly in the 20th century, however the placement of the M4 motorway has prevented it from being enveloped by Swindon and has, therefore, helped the area to retain its identity as a village.

Location and Travel

Wroughton is an extremely well-connected village that sits on the A4361 between Avebury and Swindon, the latter of which is just 2.2 miles away. It also sits within easy reach of the M4 motorway between junction 15 and junction 16. Wroughton is on the edge of the Marlborough Downs, which is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Additionally, it is just 7 miles away from Avebury’s World Heritage Site and 11 miles away from the market town of Marlborough.

Local Amenities

In addition to being within easy reach of the Marlborough Downs and Avebury, the town is close to the popular Ridgeway national path, which connects to the famous Uffington White Horse.

Wroughton Reservoir is a popular fishing spot which spans more than a hectare and houses a variety of different types of fish, including carp, rudd, bream and tench. Other sporting amenities in the area include Wroughton ASC Swimming Club, a local leisure centre, and a BMX track. As well as being surrounded by beautiful countryside, the village also has several green spaces, including Thorney Park and the Weir Field and recreation area.

In addition to a selection of convenience stores and supermarkets, residents also have easy access to pubs, cafes and restaurants, as well as the local Ridgeway Hospital and health centres.
