A very important message for employers

Wednesday December 23, 2020

Christmas is almost upon us. After a momentous build-up this year, with Christmas trees and lights popping up as early as mid-November, we really hope that you and your workers can enjoy a well-deserved break, no matter what restrictions you face.

Although the season is different in many ways this time around, we have seen some great examples of togetherness – albeit from a safe social distance.

Whether that’s Secret Santa assisted by some essential key workers delivering the gifts, or virtual Christmas parties with games and fancy dress, the spirit of the season is alive and well.

With just two nights left until the 25th, you may well be thinking, “What could The HR Dept need to tell me so close to Christmas Day?”. Well other than to wish you and your team a merry Christmas, we wanted to share a gift that you can carry with you into the new year: An important secret to success.

The secret to success

Some people can spend a lifetime seeking out the secret to success, but in doing so overlook the most accessible and inexpensive key component: having fun!

When work becomes fun it no longer feels like work.

By having fun, you will find that you are able to relax more, think clearly, build better relationships, and have some really, really good ideas.

When you are having fun at work, your employees are also more likely to follow suit, thus creating a happy, healthy, productive, and prosperous working environment.

There’s no time like the present

2020 has been a difficult year. Even if your business has not been directly impacted by the pandemic, you, or your employees, may have experienced difficulties personally. The aftershock of which can have long lasting effects on mental health and well-being.

There is no time like the present to make a commitment to yourself, your workers, and your business to have more fun, now and in the future.

Remember, fun is for life, not just for Christmas.

Party music, bright lights, delicious food. There are many enticing mood enhancers at this time of year. In fact, January always has a tough act to follow so no wonder it’s often referred to as the most depressing time of the year.

However, January represents new beginnings, and after the year that your team has had, a crucial new beginning should be one that makes more time for fun. Even in the absence of festive themed music and jumpers.

Love to laugh

You will have spent the best part of 2020 trying to avoid contagious coronavirus, which is not much fun at all.

However, we hope that at times you were still able to find something to laugh about. Because laughter is contagious in a good way and it’s good for your health (from a safe distance).

Laughter decreases stress hormones and boosts serotonin, the body’s natural anti-depressant.

So when you’re planning your to-do list for week one back at work, it can’t hurt to do more of what makes you laugh.

Fun for all and all for fun!

Did you know that HR can sometimes be nicknamed The Fun Police? Not us though, we are the funnest of them all. Our mission is simply to ensure that everyone can join in.

Sometimes that involves signposting extra support for those who need it, or giving guidance on a fair and equal playing ground.

So if you’d like a little help on knowing how to bring more fun into your business in a fair and productive way, give us a call. We’re only ever a phone call away.
