A Bit About Corfe Mullen

History

The village’s name is derived from the old water mill which sits alongside the River Stour in the original setting of the village. The village is mentioned within the Domesday Book, and evidence of human settlement in the area dates back as far as the Palaeolithic times, based on archaeological discoveries such as flint axe-heads.

A Roman settlement existed within the village for a prolonged period of circa 400 years, and their influence on agriculture and industry continued for long after the Romans departed. Evidence of their occupation includes the 40 acre fortress north of the village and the Roman road that to this day forms the Eastern boundary of the village.

The village was continuously occupied throughout the Saxon, Norman and Middle Ages, before achieving a period of stability during the Elizabethan and Georgian periods. The toll route between Higher Blandford Road and Mill Street was constructed during the latter half of the 18th century, followed by a further succession of toll roads and, in the 19th century, the railway.

During preparations for D-Day, African American troops occupied Corfe Mullen in 1942 and during their time in the village, built the Tarrant Rushton aerodrome to house their Dakota aircraft and gliders.
