A bit about Moordown

History

Believed to be the oldest settlement in the Bournemouth area, Bronze Age artefacts have been discovered at Moordown, in the Redbreast Hill and Nursery Road localities. The area was also mentioned in records of Christchurch Priory in the fourteenth century. By the mid nineteenth century, Moordown had evolved into a hamlet with a notorious reputation for unlawful behaviour, and there were attempts to improve things with the establishment of a school chapel. 

By the end of the twentieth century, Moordown had been developed as a residential area on the edge of nearby Bournemouth, having been absorbed into its borough in 1901.

Location and travel

Moordown is located approximately three miles to the north of Bournemouth town centre, in the county of Dorset with regular bus services taking passengers to the town centre, the railway station and the coach station, from where they can travel further afield. Bournemouth International Airport is a short drive away, and the A338 (known locally as the Wessex Way) provides good links for road users.
