History of Ringwood

Ringwood was originally an ancient Saxon settlement that sprang up alongside the River Avon. Its existence was first formally recorded in 961, after King Edward the Peaceable gifted several acres of land to the local Abbey. Since then, the town has grown from strength to strength as a tourist destination in particular, with many notable people born in Ringwood including nobility.

Location and Travel

Ringwood is located in the New Forest on the River Avon, and it’s the Western gateway to the New Forest and Hampshire. Ringwood is around 34 miles from Salisbury and the Avon Valley Path heads right down to the South Coast and Christchurch priory. It’s an easy commute to Southampton, Portsmouth and Bournemouth, which is just nine miles away. Verwood is five miles away, Cardiff is 74 miles away and London is 86 miles. Travel is very easy in this part of the world. You can take a coach to the centre of London in two hours, choose the train for a journey of about an hour, or drive into the city in around one hour and fourty minutes depending on traffic conditions. The A31 is the main road in and out of Ringwood and popular local commuter spots include Hightown, Crow, Poulner, Blashford and St Ives.

Local Amenities in Ringwood

Ringwood is a bustling tourist town with excellent amenities for everyone’s needs. The town has its own ancient charter dating back to the twelfth century and its weekly market runs every Wednesday. Within Ringwood town, there are plenty of restaurants, cafes, shops and businesses, as well as lovely green spaces, a leisure centre, theatre and plenty of other entertainment. Nearby Rockford Common is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) for its wildlife and the broader area of the New Forest is packed with outdoor pursuits, walking, and other pretty villages and towns, not to mention miles of nearby coastline to explore. There are plenty of attractive visitor accommodation options, numerous spas, boutiques, outdoor leisure activities such as horse-riding, local museums, art galleries and more to discover. Beaulieu National Motor Museum is another notable local attraction.
