A Bit about Winton

History

The development of Winton is credited to a pair of sisters, Marianne and Georgina Talbot, who owned the land. They were so struck by the plight of local farm workers that they vowed to give them a better life. These Scottish philanthropists created Talbot Village, a collection of artisan cottages. They also bought land to the east of this, where more wells and cottages were created and the whole area became known as Winton.

The name Winton is thought to derive from Wintoun (CORR) Castle in Scotland, which was owned by a relative of the Talbot sisters. The legacy of the Talbot sisters still lives on in Winton, with their names used for many roads and landmarks. In 1897, Winton Urban District Council was formed and in 1901, Bournemouth increased its boundaries to take in Winton. Famous faces who have lived in Winton include comedian Tony Hancock, of ‘Hancock’s Half Hour’ fame.
