A Bit About Sutton
Sutton is an ancient parish listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 but there is archaeological evidence of a settlement here dating back long before the Roman occupation. In the 18th Century, a turnpike road from London to Brighton was built through Sutton, and when the London to Brighton stagecoach service began in 1760, rapid expansion followed.
Location and Travel
Sutton lies on the edge of the North Downs and although it is a large town at the centre of a municipal borough, it is still seen as a gateway between the metropolis and the Surrey countryside. It is well connected to London with rail links to Victoria, London Bridge and St Pancras International and has direct services to many other suburban towns. Heathrow and Gatwick airports are easily accessible and Sutton is within easy reach of the M25 at the heart of the UK’s motorway system.
Local Amenities
Although it is a major conurbation, Sutton retains many areas wherein its origins as a cluster of villages can still be felt. The heavily pedestrianised town centre makes it very easy to enjoy its rich variety of shops, from major chains to independents as well as cafes and restaurants offering cuisines from around the world including Lebanese, Malaysian, Turkish and Japanese. The town boasts two impressive covered shopping centres, the St Nicholas Centre and the smaller Times Square.
For live entertainment, any visitor is spoilt for choice with many music and arts venues to be found on and around the High Street which stretches for nearly a mile. It was at Sutton’s Red Lion pub that The Rolling Stones were discovered in 1963. Street performances are held regularly and in the summer, Sutton’s innovative outdoor ‘Sunset Cinema’ attracts large audiences to its evening film showings.
Sutton is also home to Nonsuch Mansion and Park, an events venue built on the site of Henry VIII’s ill-fated and now demolished Nonsuch Palace, a creation he did not live to see completed. Green spaces abound, including the charming Manor Park on Throwley way and Carshalton Road, with its environmentally friendly straw-bale café. Nearby, two fabulous museums occupy the ancient buildings of Honeywood House on Horsham Road and Whitehall on Malden Road.
In 2021 Sutton United FC, based at Gander Green Lane, won promotion to the Football League’s second division for the first time in their 123-year history.
