A Bit About Wallington

Located in the London Borough of Sutton, Wallington is a thriving town in the SM postcode area that is home to a range of businesses serving both the local community and the surrounding area.

History

The historic town of Wallington makes an appearance in the 1086 Domesday Book situated north of what is now the town centre. To the south, the picturesque Wallington Bridge crosses the River Wandle. The Domesday Book record makes note of several mills and ponds, one of which can still be enjoyed as it is the town’s Grange Boating Lake.

During the First World War, Wallington was known for its lavender oil production with many fields stretching across the town and the surrounding areas of Beddington and Carshalton. This aspect of the town’s history is remembered in many ways today, including in a large lavender sculpture at the junction of Stafford and Woodcote roads, lavender Christmas lights which are hung during the holiday season, and on the shoulder badge of the Sutton Scouts.

Location and Travel

Wallington is well-served by a selection of road and rail services, offering easy access to London Bridge, West Croydon, Tooting Broadway, Epsom Downs, Caterham, Crystal Palace, and St Helier. The National Cycle Route 20 runs along the edge of Wallington, offering connections to Wandsworth and Brighton, and there are also frequent rail services to London Heathrow airport.

Amenities

Wallington is a thriving town with plenty of amenities and events for local communities to enjoy, including a public library as well as independent shops, cafes and cinemas. The A237 runs through the heart of the town and is home to a number of large supermarkets, bakeries, smaller grocery stores, the town’s medical centre, beauty salons, pubs, restaurants, and Wallington railway station.

A local farmers’ market is held each month, there is easy access to several open green spaces spanning more than 100 acres, and the area is home to a community farm which is the only one of its kind in the Greater London area. There are also a selection of smaller green spaces to enjoy, including The Grove, which is located near the leisure centre on Westcroft Road and Carshalton Park and includes a playground and several tennis courts.
