A Bit About Caterham

History

Caterham’s history is marked by its division into two areas: Caterham on the Hill and Caterham Valley. The original village centre was near the ridge of Caterham on the Hill, close to the railway station in Caterham Valley. The area’s rich history is highlighted by several listed buildings and churches along Hill Street/Church Hill. The manors of Caterham, including Porkele and Upwode, have a storied past involving notable figures like Humphrey Stafford, 1st Duke of Buckingham, and Thomas Sackville, 1st Earl of Dorset. After the Reformation, the main rectorial manor was granted to various owners, including William Sackville and Robert Hartopp.

Caterham’s growth was significantly influenced by the Victorian era and the arrival of the railway line in 1856. This period saw the expansion of the town and the construction of larger parish churches, such as St Mary the Virgin and St John the Evangelist, reflecting the town’s development and increasing population.

Location and Travel

Located in east Surrey, on the A22 Eastbourne road, Caterham is nestled in a valley cut into the dip slope of the North Downs, within the Tandridge hundred. The town is well-served by Caterham railway station, offering excellent connectivity to surrounding areas and beyond. This advantageous location makes Caterham an attractive place for businesses and residents alike, combining the serenity of countryside living with the convenience of easy access to larger urban centres.

The proximity to major transport routes like the M25 and the presence of a reliable public transport system, including train and bus services, enhances the appeal of Caterham as a prime location for both commercial and residential purposes. The town’s location near the North Downs also provides opportunities for outdoor activities and contributes to the high quality of life enjoyed by its inhabitants.

Local Amenities

Caterham boasts a range of local amenities that cater to the needs of its community and visitors. The town is home to the Church Walk Shopping Centre, situated opposite the railway station, offering a variety of shopping options. Caterham’s rich automotive heritage is celebrated through Caterham Cars, known for the iconic Caterham Seven sports car. The town’s historical significance is further underscored by the presence of ancient churches like St Lawrence and St Mary the Virgin.

Caterham also offers various recreational facilities, including Queen’s Park with its playgrounds, tennis courts, and Caterham Bowls Club. The town’s vibrant community life is reflected in its events and social gatherings, providing a welcoming atmosphere for residents and visitors. Additionally, Caterham’s proximity to London and other major towns in Surrey adds to its appeal as a location that balances modern amenities with traditional charm.
